Mini Reviews: Velvet Buzzsaw, The Hole in the Ground, Piercing, & Pledge

While I was stuck in bed and dying from the stomach flu last week, I caught up with three films that I’ve been highly anticipating for this early half of 2019– and one that I threw in for good measure that has drummed up some quieter buzz amongst the horror critics circles.  (In between my fits of nausea, shaking, and pressing pause countless times to doze off into sick-induced sleep oblivion, I jotted down just a handful of notes for each, which is why they’re only getting mini reviews as opposed to a full page for each of the four.)  All are solid recommendations at the very least– with a couple being more surprising standouts over the others…

Horror Genre Films Coming in 2019

2018 absolutely slayed the horror genre with amazing directorial debuts and surprising indie wonders, but it appears 2019 may give the previous year a run for its money.  I scoured the Internet to find that 2019 will bring us many big budget curiosities, subversive A24 arthouse horrors, and…quite a few remakes of things we didn’t necessarily ask for.  Here are over 40 genre films (including horror-thrillers, crime mysteries, and dark biopics) that will be coming our way in 2019.

Netflix’s Veronica proves that a film doesn’t have to live up to its “scariest movie” moniker in order to be effective (spoilers)

When the fuck are characters in horror films going to learn not to mess with ouija boards?

I’m about two-three weeks late (sue me) checking out the Spanish horror film Veronica that people have dubbed one of “the scariest movies ever made” and, while I figured that I wouldn’t agree with that marketing necessarily, I was still pretty impressed.

I’ve been MIA here on Horrormonal for the last seven weeks (2018 has been off to a rough start for me) but now I’m back.  And you know damn well that I still managed to squeeze in a few horror movies that I’ve been slacking on seeing.  Instead of dedicating a long, thorough review to each of the five films I’ve watched recently (because some of them just flat out DON’T DESERVE that much attention anyway), let’s play a game of “Yay,” “Nay,” or “Just Okay”… Continue reading

The Endless (2018)

2017 was truly incredible for our favorite red-headed stepchild genre, aka horror, as we witnessed some masterpieces like Get Out receive not only great numbers at the box office and critical acclaim, but even Golden Globe nominations…so 2018 has some huge shoes to fill.  From the looks of things as of now, 2018 will have its share of things that I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT WAIT for…as well as a couple that look laughable, that I will likely skip, but others may enjoy.  Here are some of the horror pieces to look forward to (and a few to probably not waste your money on) coming out this year, in order of their releases.

The Invitation (2015)

While I am the first to admit that I sometimes complain about the lack of solid options for Netflix’s horror movie selection, there are always a few gems that seem to slip under our radar.  Whether they be independent movies that don’t receive a lot of attention from mainstream audiences, or releases that just get swept under the rug because of box office juggernauts like It that distract us, you may not have seen or even heard of some of these horror treasures, but you’ll hopefully take a break from binging Stranger Things and Black Mirror for a change, and give these lovely little movies a chance.    Continue reading
